At the Atomium in my new jeans
Last night didn’t get much better. I was woken up at 2am because one of the students fell on glass at a bar and ended up in the hospital. He is fine, and even made it to class. I took the afternoon and went to Brussels
. Its only an hour from here by train. I had been to Brussels when I was in high school for one night. I didn’t really remember much about it, so I thought it would be a good day trip.
I went to the Atomium, a leftover from the 1958 World’s Fair. It’s a 300 foot high replica of an iron atom that had the fastest elevator in Europe in 1958. It has been restored recently to its 50s grandeur and was actually very cool inside. I then went back into the city, mainly to see the Grand Place and the Mannekin Pis. The Grand Place, the main square of Brussels, had been transformed into a lavender field, and smelled wonderful. It was a really hot day, and I was really sweaty – so to be surrounded by nice smelling lavender was wonderful. After my photo opportunities with the lavender and the peeing boy, I went for my late lunch of mussels, fries, and beer. It was really good. It was too hot to really walk around much more, so I took the train back to Brugge
. I am tired tonight, so its off to bed early.
