Got up at 5:15am as had a long days journey ahead of us to get to Playa del Carmen in Mexico. The Gap group were travelling the same route as us the whole way, and staying in the same hotel as Playa (Intrepid's Latin America tours used to be run by them).

First we caught the water taxi to Belize City for about 1hr, then a chicken bus for about 4hrs to Chetumal in Mexico. After that it was on to a great first class air-conditioned bus for 5hrs to Playa. They played Disney movies dubbed in Spanish the whole way which made it quite hard to sleep but it was comfortable. The only bad thing was that we were up the back near the toilets which smelt absolutely RIPE!

Finally got to Playa and walked the short distance to our hotel El Elefante. The room had 2 double beds, hot water and was clean but was STIFLINGLY hot and remained so for the duration of our stay despite our best attempts to air it out.

Headed for dinner to a really expensive restaurant where the food came in small portions and was nice but not worth the price ($US18-30 per meal). Had icecream for dessert which cost NINE US DOLLARS (!) but was delicious. I think it's lucky I'm only here for 2 days at this rate!

Sammy, Breege and I then headed out to the Blue Parrot on the beach where the drinks were free, as was entry, as it was ladies night. It was a really nice place. One half of the bar played electronic/house music and the other played hip hop, reggae, rock, ragatan and a few other things. The bathrooms were bizarre though; between the cubicles there was only opaque glass so you could see other peoples butts when they were next to you...uncomfortable! We danced a lot, and around midnight there were fire dancers dressed in dominatrix outfits who were pretty good; they even had flaming hula hoops. Sammy had a lot of beers and was singing along really loudly to all the songs - he knew all the words!

Headed home at 3:15am as my knees were really starting to hurt.
