The waterfall up Maderas volcano, Ometepe

Well the original plan had been to hike up to the top of Maderas Volcano, which was about a 10hr hike, but seeing as it had been NYE the night before and we had all consumed a lot of rum, and the fact we would have had to get up at 5am, we decided to hike up to San Ramon Waterfall instead. We took a 2hr drive in a truck around the island first to get to the base of the volcano, and then started our journey up. Well, by the end of the first 1km up I could already hardly breathe and was feeling like I had a bad case of asthma! The Swede Nina was not feeling good at all as she had been sick for a few days anyway. By the time we had done the second km poor Rowena had vomited, and about 500m further along I thought I was going to pass out. In some places the track was at a greater than 50 degree angle to the ground, and as it was partly built alongside the riverbed, as we had had rain recently, a lot of rain, it was quite muddy. For the first time I was glad I had brought my hiking boots, despite the extra weight! When we finally got to the waterfall it really was beautiful-35m tall and sending a light cascading spray over us all to cool us down. The trek down was a lot easier and we heard and saw some Howler Monkeys, or Congos, on the way.

At dinner that night we saw some traditional dancing which was really good, then headed to bed as we were all quite buggered from the rum and the hiking!

aswold says:
So, how long did this hike take, approximately?
