Row, me and Sam on the Costa Rican-Nicaraguan border

We got up early to go to our next destination, the island of Ometepe in Nicaragua, which is dominated by the two volcanoes Concepcion and Maderas. The trip across the border was not much fun, particularly when four of us had to squish into the back of a taxi that had a broken front windscreen and we got stopped by the cops for 20min in the blazing sun cos the taxi driver´s license had expired! They wouldn´t even let us out of the car. We then caught the ferry across Lake Nicaragua to Ometepe. The trip was quite nice as Lake Nicaragua is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world and the views across to the two volcanoes were amazing. Unfortunately all of the volcanoes we´ve seen so far are capped by a permanent cloud so we have not seen the top of one yet!

We were staying at Hotel Finca Venecia on Ometepe, which was a nice place, and as we arrived just as the sun was setting the light reflecting off the water was quite beautiful, especially since there were hammocks everywhere and geese floating around. We had a buffet for dinner then got started on the free rum- Flor de Cana, Nicaragua´s national brand. It was quite good and everyone had quite a lot. We heard some hilarious stories such as the time the Swedish couple drank absinthe with his parents and they all got naked and put on each others clothes...haha! Anyway...finally got to bed at 2am, with the average bedtime having been about 7-9pm so far!
