i headed out to bled from ljubljana on tuesday. the weather was a little unpredictable but i really wanted to get out to this area so hoped for the best. the bus ride was just over an hour and the rain was crazy. i thought at one point we were going to have to pull over as the roads were flooded. the bus driver stopped in bled, what we thought must have been the main station but that was miles away. we had the long walk in the rain to the hostel and mine was at the top of the biggest hill going. i made it to the hostel and was thankful for some shelter.
the rain didnt seem to ease and i wasnt keen on sitting in the hostel all day so i braved it out in an attempt to get to the lake. i literally must have walked all of 5 minutes and i was wet through, it was disgusting BUT i did make it to the lake and saw the castle through the fog but the famous island was beyond sight.
that night in a rare moment when it stopped raining we headed down the road to a small bar and played speedy jungle and of course the drinks were flowing.
i woke up early on wednesday to the amazement of sun! i wanted to make the most of it so was up and out like a flash. i headed straight for the castle, again it was a bit of a trek through the woods but the views of the lake were great. the lake was very calm so the pictures are amazing. on the way down i stopped by the church of st martins which can been seen from the lake side also.
from the church i headed to the lake side and walked around. the water was a perfect green/blue colour and the island is just perfect. in ljubljana a guy had decribed the place as magical, perfect and bliss.
i attempted to find the vintgar gorge by foot. the walk out was great as i was entering small villages and the countryside was beautiful. i walked for hours and figured i was lost (it was a very common thing for me on this trip). i decided to head back to bled.
i took one of the boats over to the island. its a 30 minute trip each way and you have 30 minutes on the island to explore. just as we arrived a wedding party had just landed too. the island is renowed for weddings and as a tradition the groom must carry his bride up the 99 steps to the church, we saw all this happen. wow! i headed into the church of assumption and rang the bell, again another tradition.
i had planned to get out to bohinj lake on thursday but with the weather on tuesday all roads were closed due to an landslide. i had hoped to take on paragliding in bohinj but obviously that wasnt to be.
i decided to take the local bus out to vintagar gorge instead. the gorge was great. it is a 1600m long and 150m hight defile. i think we were lucky to see it as it had been closed again as a knock on effect of the heavy rain.
i walked back to bled via st catherines church and through the small village of zasip. once back in bled i sat by the lakeside again watching the ducks and swans. its hard to describe but i spend hours just sitting here, its a place where you could never be bored of the views. the castle is in a dramatic spot hanging over the cliffs.
bled is a truely amazing place and must be part of anyones itinery if they are visiting slovenia. there isnt a great deal to do apart from the walk around the lake, the castle and the boat ride over to the island but its more about the atmosphere.
