Barry and the 2010 Olympic "thing" at the Summit
Today we are going to take the gondola to the top of Whistler
Mountain....I'm surprised that Whistler's elevation is only 2000', I thought it would be higher than that......but going up the long gondola ride we learned that we would be at 6000' when we departed the gondola. It was a great look toward Blackcomb Mountain and the surrounding peaks. We hiked down a trail to the chair lift that took us to the summit of Whistler Mountain (elev. 7087'); it was a bit scary as the lift went straight up toward a rock out-cropping, it seemed you could scrape your feet as you crossed over, but then we flew straight up to the mountain top. I hiked around at the summit and scrambled over the rock trails to take photos of different vantage points while Barry stayed near the summit to acclimate to the thin air.

Travelling back down the chair lift, we had a great view of the ski runs on Blackcomb Mountain; the hike back up, up, up along the mountain path to the gondola was just a bit strenuous! Travelling back down the gondola, we kept our eyes peeled for bear; a mother with 2 cubs had been seen just half an hour earlier, but we did not see anything!
We spent the rest of the day shopping and people-watching in Whistler village. It seems everyone here is international -- we have heard so many different languages and dialects. It also seems that everyone brings their dog on holiday with them.....they walk the poor dogs everywhere and carry litter bags as they go!
