Martin Mars Waterbombers on Sproat Lake
September 23, 2007
The forest companies of British Columbia bought these aircraft as scrap after world war 2 and refitted them to carry large quantities of water to drop on forest and other fires. Of the original planes purchased, two remain: Philippine Mars and Hawaii Mars. Both aircraft are based at Coulson Flying Tankers, Bomber Base Road at Sproat Lake. In summer, the planes are moored in the lake and can be approached by boats or canoes for close observation. In winter, they are taken ashore for protection from the elements.
Visitors to Port Alberni events wil occasionally be privileged to see a Martin Mars fly past - the roar of those 4 Wright Cyclone engines is something you will never forget. Occasionally the Mars will do a demonstration water drop - another unforgettable experience. During fire season, the aircraft and their crews do run-ups and test flights over the Alberni Valley to mainain readiness in the event of fires. Coulson Flying Tankers also offers tours at the base and a Mars souvenir shop

If you're into North American 1950's retro car culture, this is the place for you. Drive in, turn on your lights and the car-hop will come and take your order. This place has been a fixture in Port Alberni since I moved here 30 years ago and, I'm told, for decades before that. The menu is predictable, hamburgers, fries and fish & chips but much better quality than the national fast food joints. There is a bargain priced monthly special but I prefer the "J & L Special" hamburger, bacon and frankfurter for under $5.00. A unique establishment, fast, efficient and courteous service and inexpensive but good quality food. On Gertrude Street in Alberni near Roger Creek Park.
