The view from the boat

Have arrived in beautiful Luang Prabang after spending two days packed onto a cargo boat with 70 other sweaty smelly backpackers... and a night in the worst place in the world- Pak Beng- the half way point on the river journey from the Thai/Lao border to Luang Prabang.

The long tail boats were too slow, the speedboats too fast (and too fatal apparently) so I opted for a converted cargo barge to take me down the mekong. The views were spectacularly beautiful, and the wooden 'seats' spectacularly uncomfortable for a fourteen hour journey... not much more to say about the journey.

There was a brief moment of panic when the overladen boat entered some rapids (the mekong is still very low and therefore turbulent in lots of areas) and spun around pointing us directly at some uninviting rocks and some unwitting fishermen who scrambled up for their lives! Fortunately our 'captain' managed to ram us into the sandbank instead...and then spent the next 30 minutes trying to get out of it!

All in all a beautiful trip but really, really, really uncomfortable.
