On tour with Alex and Raul (but actually Juan)

Church in San Juan Chamula. It was market day in the square, hence all the umbrellas

We are in San Cristobal de las Casas after a heinous night bus from Oaxaca.  I got really motion sick for the first 4 hours or so, and let's just say it wasn't pretty.  Having one for dinner pre-boarding may have ruined tortas de jamon forever.  San Cristobal is a nice little town, much less traffic than Oaxaca, and there is a friendly black labrador at our hostel called Igor.

Today we went for a tour of the Mayan villages around San Cristobal with a tour company called Alex & Raul.  I think Raul may have been our driver, but our guide was Juan. Alex apparently not in the picture anymore.   We went to Chamula first and then Zincantan.  The pictures below are mostly of Chamula, the church, and the market.

Beau scowling at me with some Chamulans in the background.
The mayan community in Chamula have resisted integration, and so while the church is Catholic, the priest is only allowed to perform baptisms once a month, and no other services are held there.  The locals do their own praying to the various saints, in mayan, with candles, pine needles, chickens, eggs, and a sacred liquor called posh. It's all very personal and usually involves resolving some problem they are having, or preventing problems.  No pictures, obviously, but it was cool to see.

In Zincantan we were allowed to go into the house of a family of weavers and they made us a snack of tortillas, beans, cheese and ground pumpkin seeds.  Beau was the only brave member of our group to ask for a chile to put in his tortilla.  We also got to sample some posh, both plain (disgusting-like Beau's moonshine pre 2nd distillation) and flavored with hibiscus and cinnamon.  We actually bought a coke bottle of the hibiscus kind, though we have yet to drink it. Special occasion, perhaps.
