The North Acropolis complex of temples and palaces

We arrived in Tikal on the 14th and stayed at the ruins at the Jaguar Inn.  I almost wasted my 50 quetzal ticket to the ruins by trying to wait out a rainstorm that never arrived, but they let us in right before closing so we got to see the main plaza without the hot sun and hordes of tourists.  It was cool, though I had some terror sweats trying to descend the rickety wooden staircase from the top of Temple II (they don't let you climb the stone stairs anymore, or Temple I at all, since two people tumbled to their deaths some years ago).  The wooden stair solution doesn't seem a whole lot safer, but I guess that's my opinion.

We decided to do the early morning tour, because it's pretty much the only point of staying at the ruins instead of in nearby Flores.

We had originally thought we would just go in on our own, but unless you pay for the 4:30 a.m. tour, they don't actually let you into the ruins until later in the morning.  Our guide, Caesar, led us on a 30 minute heart-attack inducing march through the uphill jungle paths so we could watch the sunrise from atop a temple.  I should have known that was coming, because before the tour, he was trying to sell us on a 5 day walking/camping trip to the uncovered mayan site of El Mirador, 90 miles north.  Walking through the jungle for 90 miles seems more like torture than tourism, but I guess some people are into that kind of thing.

I got some decent pictures, but they'll have to wait for Guatemala City internet cafes.
