Yesterday we explored some towns around Lago de Atitlan. We stayed in San Pedro la Laguna, where there was a festival, but unfortunately we missed the scheduled rodeo by a few days. From San Pedro we took a choppy boat ride over to Santiago Atitlan to have lunch and see the casa de Maximon. Maximon is a local saint of sorts, a combination of Saint Simon, the conquistador Pedro de Alvarado and various Mayan gods. He is generally offered money, cigarettes, cigars and liquor (kind of like Jobu in the movie Major League).

Unfortunately, I don´t think I gave Maximon enough money. Today we left the lake for the market day in Chichicastenango. It was crazy. So many stalls crammed into already small streets, walking in circles, and always bargaining for everything. I bought a few things, including a Maximon statue for Andy, an umbrella (to ensure it never rains again) and a mayan mask. 2 hours after we got back to the hostel in Antigua, the bag was gone. Also, earlier I lost a ring I had just bought. And then, to top it all off, my camera was stolen while I was sitting in the main square, taking a picture of the cathedral.
I bought Andy another Maximon, because it´s the only thing he wants, but I may have to either ship it out to him or give Maximon some more offerings. I think he is causing my troubles. I´ve been told these sort of tricks are his specialty.
