Empty promises
Puerto Morelos has the largest english language bookstore in Mexico. True. There are artisan shops where you can buy hammocks. True. It is a small fishing village, not all commercial like Playa del Carmen. True.
Unfortunately, the Alma Libre bookstore is closed until October, the hammock shop never opened despite displaying a sign stating hours from 9 am to 9 pm, and small fishing village means no backpacker infrastructure (hostels, etc.) and a $30 hotel room with no ac right next to the hotel bar. However, I would wholeheartedly recommend Puerto Morelos if you ever want to rent a condo for the winter fairly cheaply.
We headed to Playa after one day and got 6 new/used books, sat on the beach and had drinks at a bar that is literally an underground cave. Good times, until we discovered some kind of bugs in the bed at the hostel.
So, finally, today we escaped Mexico for Belize. After 2 hours here we've met several nice people with advice for places to go, a nice place to stay, and a tasty chinese restaurant. Good times are here again.
