Beau and I went to the small city of Valladolid to see the cenotes and the ruins of Ek Balam. Sadly, no one wanted to take us the 20 miles to Ek Balam for less than $20, so we decided to scrap that plan. Cenotes, however were much closer. And quite cool. We started in the late afternoon at the one in the city. It was open on one side and had some europeans swimming in it (easily classified as such b/c of the speedo and willingness to get naked in public to change back to clothes). Less impressive than the underground ones, but there are pictures below.
The next morning we went out to x-kekem, the largest and most popular cenote for swimming. We were there right when they opened, so after climbing down the stone stairs to the undergroud cavern, it was just us and the bats.
