America the Beautiful

A beautiful sunset just outside of Boise, ID

I love this country, I have had the chance to see some amazing things.  Don't worry, this blog isn't here to make it sound like I am saying America is better than any other country in the world.  I am by nature very patriotic, but that isn't what this blog is about.

I was thinking this morning how I see these people that have traveled all over the world and get to do so very often, feeling bad because I haven't really gone overseas in quite a while.  Then, while I was taking some sunrise pictures out of the back door to my shop I remembered something I read on a backpacker's blog in the Sydney Morning Herald about how not enough Australians travel to their OWN country.  We often are looking for an escape, far far away in a forgotten and mysterious land, all the while we are passing up what is right in front of our noses.

The waves crashing at Waikiki.
We don't stop and look in our own backyard for the escape that is there, whether it is a day trip, a road trip, or a picnic during our busy work schedules.

This is for everyone, whether you are from California, Holland, Beirut, China, anywhere.  Take all the globe trotting adventures you can get, this world is an amazing place, but don't forget to stop and take a look around at what you have right in front of you, the beauty that you pass every day on your way to work.  Throughout my travels I am going to (try my best to) update this blog as regularly as I can, hoping that you will see some of the really cool(and sometimes really goofy) stuff that I pass and think "hey that looks like the stupid little statue that I see in our lobby at work" or "hey I know that place", and realize that wherever you are in this world, the beauty is there, you just have to slow down and look.  And for God's sake take a picture!  Because when it's all said and done, the only thing you can take with you is your memories.

I take it this way: while I'm still young and healthy and can eat strange food and sit in a plane for hours, I'll travel far and long. Later, when I'm (hopefully) old and (not hopefully) not so healthy and fit, I'll stay in my own country - close to home in case I get a heart attack or break my hip or loose my glasses, you know :)

Wonderful blog.
I am one of the Australians that have actually seen a lot of my own country, the trouble with travelling in Australia is that it costs twice as much to travel interstate as it does to go to a neighbouring country. Things are getting better though.

I think I agree with everything you've said here. It is so great to appreciate the country you live in. I know I've only traversed the western half of the US and there is so much more to see and do.
