La Boquería. La Rambla. Barcelona! I liked the color of the peppers hanging there.

A visit to Barcelona without a stroll down Las Ramblas and a look into the Boquería market would be like... hmmm...  a paella without rice?  Café con leche without the leche?  Something like that, it just wouldn't be complete.  This is a fantastic place to wander around, see the amazing variety of people, products and the nice way everything is presented.  There's an amazing array of smells, sights, colors, textures...

It's also a look at how people really shopped traditionally in Spain - the Boquería has been around since the 12th century and just about anyone from Barcelona or who has lived there has memories of this place. In Catalonia, cities and towns were founded around open-air markets where traveling salesmen and farmers would come to sell their wares.

La Boquería was no exception and was originally an open-air market by one of the gates in the old city walls.  So, this market, in different variations has been a central part of the city for over 700 years.

Even now, many people prefer a weekly visit to the market to going to a supermarket. There are markets like this one in most every neighborhood in Barcelona, and three other markets are worth a visit:  the are Mercat de la Concepció on Carrer Valencia, El Mercat de Gràcia (Travessera de Gràcia) y El Mercat de Sant Antoni.  Even if it means using up their whole Saturday morning,  many people I know in Barcelona don't miss their weekly trip to the market.  The meats, fruits and vegetables are fresher and it's also a very pleasant social activity.  Once you've gone to the same "parada" (or stand ) a few times, the people get to know you, advise you as far as what to buy (and what not to buy which is equally important!)  It becomes a weekly custom, breakfast at the market included!

Before leaving, I decided to go check out La Boqueria one more time.  Here are some of the photos I took...
