Recharging bateries in one of my favourite places EVER!

One of my favourite sculptures :)
So one day my friend decided she wants to buy a jacket. And since there are no cool shops in out hometown (obviously), she decided we should go to Toruń. It's only 40 min by bus away and I love the old part of the town, so i thought "What the heck?"
After we arrived to the city we took a walk on one of the main streets - Chmielna - and head for the old market square. Having done a marathon through some of the shops and FINALLY picked the right jacket for Kasia (it's hard to suit her taste!) we decided it's chocolate time and stoped by this lovely cafe (a bit posh and pricey but I guess that's the way we like it some times ;) ). Delicious cup of cherry chocolate! We also felt like eating something but, alas, we got lost (ok, I admit, I got lost - which is highly unusual , 'cause I now this city very well and I never get lost when on my own - the same thing happened in Prague :P)  We ended up having a good meal at Green Way (it took me ages to find it).
Stylish :)

When it got a bit late we realized we have no money for the bus fare. What do we do? Hitch-hike of course. NOT! We took a tram and got off at the last stop by the freeway to our destination. Alas, no driver took interest in two cute girls wanting to get a lift. For almost 50 minutes! What's with those people?
So we got bored, took the tram back to the center and after taking out some money from the ATM, managed to catch one of the last buses to Bydgoszcz. We were so tired we snoozed a bit.
All in all - a fun day :)

You can also check out my friend's travel blog from that day: http://www.travbuddy.com/travel-blogs/34977 (have no idea will she update it any time soon? Any comments on that, Kasia?)

The legends of Torun - How were Katarzynki first made?
Toruń is famous for it's special kind of ginger bread (pierniki) called Katarzynki. They are named after Katarzya or Kasia (so Catharina or Kate). But why are they shaped in such a form and how did the name came up? Well... There are 3 versions of the legend, each is a different story really.

The first and most popular states that once upon a time there was a baker or a confectioner who was a master in his craft. He had a daughter called Katarzyna, who helped him with his work. One time the baker got very sick and Kasia needed to raise money for medicine. But she couldn't find the baking tray her father used so she cut little circles with a glass and baked them. However the cookies attached in a bunch of 6 and turned in a shape well known today. The girl was worried she won;t be able to sell any ginger breads but it turned out people loved it. Not only the unique form drew attention but also everybody praised the wonderful taste. Some say that it was not only flour, honey and spices but also the girl's love for her father that made the cookies so special.

The second story claims that katarzynki were first prepared and served by a nun Katarzyna as a thank you for the Teutonic Knights for protecting and watching over her and her sisters. Years later when Katarzyna's order was in financial troubles Katarzyna's recipe saved the situation.

The last version of the legend is a cute love story, even though a but farfeched :)
Once upon a time there was a poor baker who was in love with a wealthy man's daughter - Kasia (surprise, surprise!). One evening the boy saved a little drowning bee and it turned out that it was the queen of bees herself! As a thank you for saving he life the bee taught the boy a new recipe for delicious cakes.
The next day it turned out that the king of Poland is visiting Toruń and all the people ware suppose to prepare some special gifts for him. The boy decided to bake pierniki and, thinking of Kasia, shaped them in a form of 2 hearts joined with wedding rings. When the king saw those ginger breads and tried them he was so astonished and pleased, he ordered the baker to step forward. After hearing the love story the King ordered Kasia to marry the boy. The boy was rewarded with gold and could finally get together with his beloved girl.

Hope you enjoyed and remember to try katarzynki when you visit Toruń, they're delicious ;)
Yummy :)
