Quarry 13 - scuba, fishing, and basalt dikes

I had been meaning to come to St. Cloud sometime to visit Quarry Park.  St. Cloud is 1-1.5 hours northwest of the Twin Cities, depending on where you are coming from.  It used to be a granite quarry and is now a county park.  The park has hiking trails, a swimming quarry, fishing, scuba, rock climbing, ski trails in winter, and geocaching! It is also one of the few areas of Minnesota where you can see granite bedrock.  I spent a few hours wandering the trails, taking photos, learning the history, and geocaching.  I got there in the morning, but by the afternoon, the parking lot was packed.  Most of those people were at the swimming quarry - which has water over 100 ft deep!  They were floating in the water, while others were jumping off the cliffs at various points.

It looked like a lot of fun, but I didn't have any swim stuff with me.  You definintely want to be a good swimmer here, because the water is deep!  I don't know how warm the water is.  Since it is deep and spring fed, it might be a bit cool.  There is also a floating boardwalk that goes through a big wetland between the swimming quarry and the parking lot.  It is $5 to park, or $16 for an annual pass.

I wrote a review for the park, but it is listed under Waite Park, since that is the actual location - a suburb of St. Cloud.  But who does research of things to do in specific suburbs?  So I'm putting this entry under St. Cloud to hopefully steer people towards this really cool park.
