Headwaters of the Mississippi River
Yup, that wonderful river of ours has its lowly beginnings in northern Minnesota.  A little stream that you can easily step across on stones as it leaves Lake Itasca is the official headwaters of the Mississippi River.  Itasca State Park is about a half hour drive from Bemidji, Minnesota.  The park has a wonderful driving loop tour and some great hiking trails through tall trees and grassland.  Many people bike the loop road.  I tried once, but it was deceptively hilly and I was in no shape for it.  Instead I turned around and took the few mile trail through the park.  I'd bike up to a trail, then hike a little bit, and then bike some more., then stop and play on the playground, then bike some more.  I guess I'm just a big kid at heart :)

Alyssa, you need to publish a Minnesota tourist book. I'll be glad to buy the first copy :-D

That is pretty cool. My grandfather's family comes from Catskill, NY and the creek that runs through their property eventually feeds into the Hudson River. Its pretty mazazing when you see something so small knowing it becomes a mighty river.
