On our way to the acropolis...so far away!
So today was our only full day in Athens! We stayed two nights but we didn't get in till 4am last night and tomorrow we have to leave the hostel around 5:30am to get to the port to catch our ferry to ios! We woke up a little late seeing as we didn't arrive until the wee hours of the morning so when we did wake up all our roomies were gone but oh well. We both showered but I don't really know why as it was sooo hot you pretty much feel gross again about 2 seconds after your out haha. The showers were OK but leaked alot so the floor was pretty sick after and really slippery so that sucked. First thing we did when we left the hostel was go to a ferry place to buy our tickets to Ios. The guy who was selling us the tickets was really rude!! I was just trying to talk about the different kind of tickets there were and he was getting all mad and yelling and like you don't know, do you want the tickets, don't waste my time!! All I was doing was asking!!! Anyways so we bought the tickets which were about 35 euro or something and soo not worth it lol (see next entry) After that we stopped at some little place where you can create your own sandwhich.
Me and Melissa at the acropolis
Somewhat like subway but it was a little greek restaurant with bright green and pink chairs hehe. After that we did the walk up to the entrance where you buy your tickets to get into the Acropolis and along the way we did a little shopping. Melissa and I bought these little bags from this cute old greek lady who was sooo nice!! So we bought our tickets which got us into a lot of places. First was the theatre or dionysos which was pretty cool. Melissa's sister really like theatre and goes to school for it so we took some cool pictures for her. And then we took the long walk up to the Acropolis. Now I know it's actually not that bad but at 1pm in the afternoon when it's about 43 celcius and the hottest part of the day and your climbing a big hill, it's pretty dam hard and hot!!! But we managed to make it up there alive yay! The acropolis is soo sweet!! It kind of sucks that it's under construction as it ruins the pictures but I know it's for the best for preservation reasons and such.
Sitting up near the acropolis
I do remember there were some guys up there with us and they were asking us to take pictures of them which is fine you know because we ask people to take pictures of us but they were sooo rude and demanding and we took like 10 pictures of them and they were like, now like this, and like this, and no do it that way and I didn't even want to take pictures of them because they were soo rude! Bah so many encounters with rude people today!! We got pretty lost trying to come down from the Acropolis and I don't know why but we didn't end up going down the way we came up and it took us a while to get back to the origional street that lead us to the Acropolis. Anyways we finally did make it and then we went to the Temple of Zeus! The temple was soooo sweet!!!! And it's soo BIG!! Like unbelievably big! It was crazy! It was really cool though.
Not that big...hehe
After the temple we were planning on heading to another one of the sites that I can't remember what it's called that you get in for with the origional ticket we bought. As we were walking their we came across this street that looked really cool so we were like, "hey lets wander down here, this looks cool"...3 hours later we make it back to the beginning of this "cool" street and head to where we were origionally going haha. We ended up walking around plaka and we got really distracted by all the cool shops and then we found an internet cafe and was trying to contact our hostel in Ios so we could let them know what time to pick us up at the port the next day. Anyways the place we wanted to go was closed which sucked but we got some ice cream and then headed back to the hostel because we were really hot and pretty sunburnt by now.
one of the many strays we saw
When we got back to the hostel there was a sign on our room door saying, "Lori and Melissa you have been moved to room 13, sorry for the inconvenience" So no worries we were moved which was fine so we got upstairs and there is room 11 and room 12 but no 13. We thought maybe it was like our room 10 where we had to go through room 9 so we go into room 12 but alas there is no secret door to the mysterious room 13. So there is no more floors after this floor, this was it....where the heck is room 13?!?! Turns out you have to go OUTSIDE and around the corner to room 13. How silly are we, why didn't we think of that in the first place? lol. Anyways so we just chilled in our room and outside on the patio for a while which was nice. All of our roomies were there and they were really nice.
We decided to go out to dinner with a few of them and some other people that we had met. We went to this really sweet greek restaurant that is like a buffet. You get a big bottle of wine, bottled water, choose 12 out of the 15 dishes, and then dessert and it was only 11 euros each. The food was soooo good too! We got greek salad, bread and tzaziki, calamari, stuffed grape leaves, these bean things, pork, chicken, and lots more stuff that I can't remember but it was really good and I was really full after. After dinner we went back to our hostel and had some drinks on the roof top bar that over looked the acropolis. Once the bar closed we went to a different bar called the Orange bar and had a beer there with some people from the hostel.
It was around 1 or so when we got back to the hostel and we went to bed right away as we had to be up really early! So Athens was alright but I didn't like it that much. The sites are really awesome and it was really old and stuff but the city itself is really dirty and it was sooo hot and there wasn't really anywhere you could go to escape the heat and I just didn't like it that much. I'm glad that we decided not to stay the 4 nights because all you really need is the one full day to do all the site seeing. We didn't see it all but I bet if you wanted to you could. All you have to do is just get up earlier then us and no get distracted in plaka for 3 hours hehe. Athens City Rating:
0.5/2 Hostel (Probably would have gotten a better rating but we are bitter about this place.
Our roomies that we went to dinner with
When we booked in Munich we were so excited as it sounded sooo good so we didn't mind spending the extra money but it totally wasn't worth it and we were pretty disapointed)
