The red sand beach-first beach of the day!
Today was a totally awesome day. One of the funnest of our whole trip! We got up and the four of us (me, Melissa, Stu, and Nell) went down the street to rent ATV’s. It was only 20 euro each for the whole day so not a bad deal. Melissa only has her learners license but since were in Greece the guy didn’t really know the difference and we all got one haha. He showed us how to use them and we were off! Felt a bit wobbly at first getting used to driving them but eventually got the hang of it. Weren’t supposed to drive over 40km an hour though. First we stopped and filled them with gas and then we headed out.
To where? We didn’t really have a plan, we were just gonna drive around the whole island. While we were first driving we drove through some little town on these little side streets and basically got stuck as there were no through roads and had to turn around. Then a guy came buy and he was leading his herd of donkeys. Well the last couple donkeys got really freaked out and they were running around us in circles going crazy. I was sooo freaked out! This is probably why I am not to particularly fond of horses. I thought for sure they were just gonna snap and start kicking us. I was so scared, Stuart had to come and bail me out lol. After that we drove to a little like view point. Got off our ATV’s and looked out at the view and took some pictures. Then we just started driving again, saw some random signs that said “beach” so we decided to follow it.
2nd beach we went to
Eventually it led us to the red sand beach. Had a hard time finding some parking but eventually we did. It was a little bit of a hike along the rocks and what not but eventually we climbed down to the water. For some reason we chose the rocky side of the beach and it was rather painful actually getting into the water lol. Anyways swam on for a bit and then decided to continue on the ATV’s. On the walk back to the ATV’s poor Stu’s flip flop broke and one foot had to walk on the rocks for a bit, ouch. While we were driving back we stopped at some little convenient store and he bought a crappy new pair haha. After that we drove to Fira which is the city kind of in the middle of the island. We stopped and got some awesome gyros for lunch which were soo delicious.
3rd beach we went to
Then we got back onto the ATV’s and started to look for the next beach! Eventually we just drove and drove and we did come across another beach. It was a very long beach and it was pretty quiet. Parked the ATV’s, got off, hung around in the water for a bit, swam around yada yada and got back on the ATV’s. Eventually hit up another beach which I would say was probably the nicest one. The water was fairly deep and it was just soo pretty! Much busier but it was still so nice. After that we decided to head over to Oia so we could catch the sunset. Got there and parked our ATV’s. By this time we were all feeling pretty gross as we had been in the salt water three times so far and each time the water had dried so our clothers were all crunchy and salty and so was our skin lol.
Anyways so we got some more gyros for dinner and we just sat on a bench eating them. A cute little stray cat came up to us we fed him some of the chicken. We also saw a donkey taxi lol. Then we wandered through the town stopping at random shops until we came to the area where everyone goes to watch the sunset. We got pretty decent seats as well. The sunset wasn’t as pretty as all the pictures make it out to be but that was because Greece was having that massive heat wave so all the sky was really hazy and what not. When we first rented the ATV’s in the morning, the guy told us that we would have enough time to watch it and come back to return the atv’s...but he told us the wrong time for the sunset so we were in a mad rush to get back. Oh and we also ran into Brayden in Oia and he caught a ride back to Perissa Beach (where we were staying) on the back of Stu’s ATV.
ahhh so pretty!
It was dark when we were driving back and it was pretty hard to see. Melissa’s ATV was really shitty as well and she was so behind us and at some points we didn’t think she would make it up some of the hills lol. Anyways on the way back we ended up getting a little lost and we were totally late returning the ATV’s. We thought the guy would be really pissed off but he wasn’t even there, he had locked up his shop! So we just parked them on his property and kept the helmets and keys to return the next morning. After that we all showered and had some dinner. Oh forgot to mention, hostel was only 7 euros which was really cheap but you could definitely tell the showers were only worth 7 euros. OMG worst shower of all time, they were DISGUSTING! There was so much crap in the bottom of the showers and then they would plug and all that shit would be floating around your feet.
me in oia
And plus there was no where to hang any of your stuff and there was no fan so it got really steamy and was impossible to dry off. Man was I pissed off, just ask Melissa...she just had to leave me alone for about half hour after I got out of the shower cause I was in such a bad mood and soo cranky, wouldn’t want to talk to anyone lol. Anyways so after that nasty experience we had dinner over at Atlas again and then we headed to the beach and started to drink some of the leftover booze from the night before. Again I wasn’t really feeling the booze and kind of just hung around talking to everyone. I called it an early night and headed back to the hostel and went to bed. Not too sure what time the rest of the lot got in but I do know Melissa lost one of her sandals in the water that night lol.
prettiest picture ever!!! great shot melissa :)
