Melissa and me in the Coliseum (haha this is the benefit of having someone to walk around with you to take pics!)
So today was our official site seeing day in Rome and it also happened to be Canada day! So we weren’t in Canada to celebrate but found it pretty cool that we were in Italy for Canada day. And Melissa managed to get a whole bunch of Canada tattoos and pins from our local MP before she left. There were 5 guys from Texas in our hostel room and she gave them all a whole bunch of pins because they wanted to be Canadian for a day I guess haha. First things first we went to the Coliseum! We had to wait in line a bit to get in but we were standing next to a really nice couple and we started chatting with them and we decided to do the coliseum together so that we could take pictures of each other etc.
It was really sweet being inside. It was so old! But looking into it and looking around you can still kind of picture what would go on in there with gladiator fights and what not etc. At one point we were walking around and we were telling this couple about the trip twins and how we see them and EVERYWHERE and wouldn’t you guess it, guess who we bump into in the coliseum??!?! Yup, Todd and Jason! We were just like wtf?!? Haha it was funny cause we bumped into them as we were telling the couple about them. We gave them some Canada pins though because it was Canada day lol. After leaving the coliseum we walked through Palatine Hill which was really nice and old. It’s so unbelievable how old everything in Rome is. It’s amazing! I don’t know about anyone else but it makes me want to go back in time to see everything when it was fully functioning and bursting with life and people. I think it would be amazing! After walking through there we came across what I think is the parliament buildings?? I’m not too sure but it was a pretty grand building.
melissa and me inside the panthenon...are you allowed to take pics inside even?? haha
Too bad it was covered in scaffolding! From there we walked on to the Panthenon which was pretty sweet. Apparently it’s one of Rome’s best preserved ancient buildings and the painted Raphael is buried here (yep that’s Lonely planet speaking haha!). When we were outside we paid those people who were dressed as gladiators to get a picture with them because it was just so cool! After that we walked to Piazza Navona which is where all the artists paint their pictures. There were tons of paintings there that you could look through and choose. Melissa and I both picked some out for our moms as a present. From there we walked onto the Trevi which was the most exciting thing to see I think. We saw it last night on the pub crawl in the dark which was really pretty as well. It was so exciting to actually be there and to see it in the flesh. It’s like the Stonehenge, kind of weird to be standing right in front of it and seeing it for real rather than in a picture or a movie. Holy cow was it crowded though! Never seen so many tourists in my life lol.
Me and a Roman Gladiator
Ah well we still got some good pics and we both stood with our backs to it and threw coins in over our shoulders. Guess that means we will make it back to Rome one day! J from there we walked to the Spanish Steps purely to just sit on them and get a picture. We did that but weren’t there for longs because OUCH they were hot from the sun lol. We literately just sat down, snapped the picture and jumped up again haha. It was getting to be late afternoon now and we decided to head back to the hostel and get some food and then go out partying for Canada day! Apparently there was some Canada day pub crawl thing that we were pretty tempted to go on so that was what we were gonna do.
Melissa and I in Piazza Navona
Before we got to the hostel we stopped at a pay phone to call our parents and what not. I was talking to my mom for quite some time telling her all about Rome and about how we were going to go out that night. But about 5 minutes after I hung up the phone with my mom I just started feeling so sick. It just came over me so quickly and I was freezing cold (on July 1st in Rome!) and i was wearing my jeans and a sweatshirt lying under the blankets in the hostel and my head was spinning and I just felt like crap. So unfortunately I wasn’t too up to going out that night and we just chilled in our hostel room for a while talking (well Melissa was, I was dying haha) to the Texans. After a while we decided to go out somewhere for dinner and the 7 of us went to some little restaurant that I can’t remember the name of or even what I ate. I do know I wasn’t drinking at all though and still felt really crappy. We went back to the hostel and I went to bed only waking up every little while to some loud obscene comment because they were all playing 21 haha.
So unfortunately we did not get to party for Canada day in Italy which makes me a little sad L
I'm smiling but in my head I as like, "ouch, ouch, hurry up take the pic!" haha
-1 for hostel throwing out paintings
