I thought it was just a big church and a couple of offices for all the priests and some warehouses with the paintings that Robert Langdon stole.
I had no idea about the Vatican Museum and had thought the Sistine Chapel was part of St Peters Basillica.
Anyway, the point is that I'm bloody glad I went, and even more bloody glad I did a tour.
The museum was awesom! Still dont really know what it has to do with the Catholic Church but there was some ridiculously impressive, ancient and amazing stuff. From paintings, sculptures, tapestries, maps, architecture. Nothing wasnt impressive.
Actually, I was extremely disappointed with the pathetically poor behaviour of the tourists in both the Sistine Chapel and the Basillica. People with no respect for churches just should not be visiting them.
This is the centre of the Catholic church and a very important place however, unfortunately, the majority of tourists arent considering religion, or even decency, into their plans... I'm not saying i'm religious. But it's not really that hard to not take photos, not talk, not shout, to take off your hat, and just walk around in silent contemplation so you dont ruin it for everyone else...
ok. that's off my chest.
Vatican was great. But very crowded. I'm glad we were not there in summer...
