Sea Kayak tour of Loreto Marine Park
The main purpose of my trip was to go on this sea kayak tour off the coast of Loreto. We headed out to our launching spot at Puerto Escondido, which is a short trip south of town. On the way out there as we were driving down the highway we saw some spouting whales out to sea. You can see them for miles and it is still impressive. Puerto Escondido is closer to the islands than the town of Loreto is so the channel crossing to the islands is shorter. It turns out to be a little over a mile over to Isla Danzante where we spend our first night. The islands are beautiful with rugged steep sided ridges in a desert setting with cactus and thorny shrubs. We set up shop on Danzante for our first night. From there it is around the south end of Danzante to make a channel crossing to the Island of Isla Carma.
We spend a few nights there and then it is back to Isla Danzante for our final night.Overall we had some great snorkeling, great food and an awesome time. The islands are secluded enough so that there is not a lot of tourist activity going on. We saw quite a bit of whale activity over the course of the 6 days and saw several manta rays jumping out of the water as well. At night it is away from city lights and the stars are amazing and there are phosphorescent specs in the water along the beaches and that is pretty neat. I love snorkeling and this was some pretty good snorkeling. I saw lots of colorful fish, several eels and some octopi. For some the water might be a little cool here in the Sea of Cortez so the guides were renting out shorty wetsuits and that made it all that much easier to stay out as long as you wanted to snorkel.
The last morning of our trip I get up just in time to hike up the trail to the ridge to see the sun rising up over the Sea of Cortez. A beautiful spot to see the sun rise. From our final campsite we head back across to the mainland at Ligui where we meet our transport back to town.
For our final night together as a group we have a celebratory dinner in Loreto at El Taste' Restaurant. It is a Mexican Restaurant (this is Mexico after all) the atmosphere is nice and the food is very good.
The trip was guided by Sea Kayak Adventures and they are a great company. They guided us well and had some of the most awesome meals you could ever make even if they were made from food we carried out ourselves in the kayaks (no motor boats to carry gear). We had chicken Mole, Taco Soup and Chili Relenos. And for our evening happy hour we had a nice snack along with our rum punches.

Fish tacos are a classic Baja Mexican food. They are deep fried fish in a soft taco shell with lettuce, tomato, cilantro special sauce and a little mayonnaise.
The restaurant serves only fish tacos and is a basic cement building with benches and a view of the kitchen but the fish tacos are authentic and very tasty. Be sure to put mayonnaise on your tacos.
