Good times in Puerto Viejo

I am settled in for a few days in Puerto Viejo before I have to head back. I enjoyed my stay here. It was a lot quieter than I was expecting. I was told that it is usually a lot more happening but I enjoyed the relaxed pace that I got when I was here. I ended taking my bike for a ride down the coast and did some snorkeling at Punto Uva park and then headed further south to explore the little town of Manzanillo. There is a dive shop there and I ask them about diving. The diving is only fair here so I decide not to pursue it that much. There is supposed to be some OK snorkeling down here off the beach at Manzanillo . You can see the rock formations off the shore where the snorkeling is.
The beaches along the coast are nice. The one to the northt of town is long and easy to find a place to have a quiet evening dip to cool off. The southern beach is more popular and has surfing. Girls on shore and guys out in the surf. Pretty cool. Nice shaded stretch of trees between the road and the beach. You may want a bike or skooter to reach this beach though.
The next day I do a zipline (canopy) tour. There is a tour company in town that takes you there. It is fun and you go through some tall trees. Lots of ziplines on the tour.
There are lots of restaurants in town. I go to a Mexican place towrds the south end of town that has an upstairs eating area (and a pet Coati that wanders though the restaurant) I had a good meal there. There is also an italian place in the main part of town where I have good meal.
Overall I like Puerto Viejo. Not too touristy and not too local. A nice relaxed mix of Rasta Man Carib and Spanish culture. Lots of green and narrow (potholed) streets.
