Anneloes with Shasta and Dakota hiding from the rain under the picknick blanket
Today's highlight was the fact
that we were going climbing in the evening. Climbing outside and to get
there it took us around a half an hour! Dakota was excited all day and
kept on telling me that he would do the honours of teaching me how to
climb. After an early dinner we all set off to Hyalite Canyon to
Practice Rock. As we were preparing to start the first climb some of
Vance's climbing partners joined us. Unfortunately just as Vance was
about ready to lead the first route it started raining. It didn't rain
that much, but enough to make the rocks slippery so that it wouldn't be
a too responsible action to climb. Dakota and Shasta both didn't like
the rain at all they were hiding underneath the pick nick blanket, but
they preferred this to going back down the steep path and getting back
to the car.
walking up to Practice Rock
They had their circle crackers and juice under the blanket
so they didn't mind the rain that much. When the rain passed we were
finally able to climb. The grading here again is different than the
French system, but I think that we climbed something that was like a 5a
with one 5b move. There are no bolts in the rock at Practice Rock, only
at the top; to make a proper anchor. So Vance had to go up with quite a
lot of gear. As it was getting dark Anneloes and the kids went down as
we tried to get out the last piece of gear that was still stuck in the
rock. A hard headed nut decided it did not want to come out of the rock
any more. So in the end we had to leave it there for the night.
Unfortunatelly when Vance went up the next day it wasn't there anymore.
Even though I climbed only two routes I had a very nice first climbing
experience in Montana!
