Lyon, Magnificient view from the Basilica, France
My second stop in France on this trip is Lyon. For couple of days my friend and I discuss about this trip, either we go to Lyon or Avignon. Due to the unpredictable weather, we decided it to be Lyon. We chose Lyon because it is nearer from Grenoble and we can come back on the same day. Moreover Avignon is further then Lyon and we unable to get a hotel there. Therefore, Avignon has to wait. We bought our tickets in advance and we packed light for the trip. We only planed a day in Lyon. So I take it like a school excursion with my personal tour guide Bernard but then I found out it was his second time there and he himself not very familiar of Lyon.
So we venture together. He also got a mission too by going to Lyon, follow my story, you will find out. ;-p
Lyon, Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, France
We leave very early in the morning to take the train at 7.45am. The journey took about 1hr 40mins, from Grenoble and the distant about 100km. When we reached Lyon train station, Lyon la Part-Dieu, we came outside of the station and saw a lot of bicycle. People can rent this bicycle and to move around the city area but then we decided to walk. The first thing we going to go is the museum called Museum of the Beaux Arts. This is the main reason why my friend wanted to go to Lyon. There is his favorite painter Francois Bacon art called “The Corrida” showing there that he wanted to see badly and a few others.
What link Bacon and Velazquez, my favorite painter, is that he is obsessed with Velazquez painting and they are both painter of portraits.
Lyon, Chimneys, France
Jean Michel Jarre-musician, David Charvet-actor, singer, and Clovis Cornillac-actor are the few famous people born in Lyon. We nearly got lost to find this museum but then we found a tourist information centre at place Bellecour. It is a huge square and they have a statue of Louis XIV there. We found the museum, we have to pay for the entrance and we wonder around for more then an hour. The best part for me is to see the old painting from 15th and 16th century and they are very huge. I sometime think that the painter must be crazy to paint in such a great area. This painting tells stories and they are beautiful. I try to look for some of my favorite painter but they are none.
After the museum, we got hungry so we walk around the city looking for a nice restaurant. We found this street called Rue Merciere, they have a restaurant on the left and right of the street and I like the vibe of it. We settled at a restaurant called Restaurant Le Gone, we had our lunch there and very satisfied. We got a very nice service from a girl that always smiling.
Lyon, Place des Terreaux-The Bartholdi fountain, France
After that we head to the older part of the town called Quartier Saint Jean to go to the Notre-Dame de Fourvière. There are buses and taxi that going up there and again my friend chose to walk up. It is like doing a pilgrimage. The Basilica was build by the people of the town to thanks Virgin Mary, they thought that she protect the town against the plague epidemic.
Below of the Basilica is a chapel they dedicated to Joseph. There is a special day on the 08th December each year, all the people in the town light a lot of candles on their windows, conjunction with a light festival ‘nuit de la saint jean’, it is Lyon Festival of Lights, and it is very crowded with people on the street. They carry lanterns and candles. I have not been to this event but for sure, I would like to see it one day. View from the Basilica is amazingly beautiful. You can see almost the whole town from the top and it is wonderful. Going down from there is the easy part; we pass by look like a park and there are many flowers.
Lyon, Crepe stall on Quartier Saint Jean, France
We came down and walk around Quartier Saint Jean. It is a nice place for shopping. A very interesting place to see is a Museum of the Miniature at Rue Juiverie.
We also had a drink in one of the bar near this area. Since we have been walking from morning, this is the time we just relax and watching people passing by. This area also you can find many old houses that were protected by the government and it is nicely design from the 15th century, during Renaissance periods. We walk around the city passing by river Saone and river Rhone. We stayed awhile at the banks of river Rhone, where you can see the local relax in the afternoon after a hard days work. I am very happy on the way back because I saw a Cheb Mami concert on DVD; do you remember the person that sang ‘Desert Rose’ with Sting? But Leila my friend from Grenoble told me that he got into trouble with the French government because he hit his wife and ran to Algeria when the time I was in France. This could be a controversy or a bad story by the tabloids, I do not know. I think he is one of the best Rai singers in the world and now I got his DVD ;-).
Lyon, One of the street on Quartier Saint Jean, France
Earlier when we walk around the city we saw an Indonesian restaurant, I told my friend that we could have our dinner here.
Since he never tried an Indonesian food before and I like to introduce him to the cuisine. Unluckily, it was closed when we came back to the restaurant. Therefore, we decided to go back to Grenoble. We have to rush to get the second last train from Lyon to Grenoble. Therefore, we just thought that we have our dinner in Grenoble. We left Lyon about 8.30pm and we are so hungry. Finally, when we reached Grenoble, we ate at the Chinese restaurant nearby the train station. We look at each other and felt very satisfied with our journey in Lyon. Bernard told me that he is looking forward to go back to Lyon again. I thought because he likes the city and then he told me that his favorite band Arcade Fire is performing a concert there soon in July. If I can summarize about Lyon, I say that this city is vibrant, cultural, centre of business and a place that have a significant role in the history of cinema. I like it, J
