We went early to the summer palace which is in the North West corner of the city. It's basically a large lake with gardens, islands and temples all connected by bridges, boats and covered walkways. It was very hot today, I don't want to know degrees, and the pollution was up from the weekend so visibility and breathing were bad, but it was so beautiful. Not as packed as the Forbidden City, but just as amazing in a different way. Totally worth the hassle of getting there and back (we were took in by a naughty taxi guy who handed Jim back what we thought was our money and said it was counterfeit and wouldn't accept it, the scam is they change the counterfeit bills for yours and hand them back to you asking you to pay with different notes. This means that you are paying them twice and getting back useless bills.
(There are two more updates to add to this China blog but time is tight right now so it may have to wait til we're back in London)
