The Dorm and Metz

I have had quite an adventurous week already because everything is so different!  There are many French students in my dorm that attend an engineering and science school, ENSAM, in the Metz Technopôle.  To briefly explain, the Technopôle is a collaborative program between two French colleges (ENSAM and Supèlec) and Georgia Tech Lorraine, which are all on the same campus, as well as many businesses that are technologically-oriented.  Napoleon named ENSAM 200 years ago, although this particular centre is a new branch.  The French students have many traditions in their school, the most noticeable of which is how they wear personalized grey lab coats at all times.  It took a while to get used to seeing them around campus and the dorm in their lab coats!  Some of these French students usually hang out in the dorm’s activity hall every night, so that is fun.  I have spent a couple of hours two different nights talking to them and they like to practice their English.  Our conversations have been really interesting.

Today, I found a piano close by in the ALOES dorm. After practicing piano for an hour, me and four other guys went downtown to explore and for dinner:  Porte des Allemands, the bridge bums, the adventure to find the mysterious wall for AJ, Temple Neuf orchestra and choir preparing for concert, new york girl singing with them that teaches french, went back to the plaza to meet up with the guys, briefly saw a staged african tribal dance performance and also some gypsy jugglers, then went with another GTL group to finish the night in Metz by seeing a movie: The daVinci Code (with French subtitles).  It was great until they periodically spoke in French in the movie… It is funny to think that I will be seeing the Louvre sometime this summer, where part of the movie was filmed.
