After leaving Willamette National Park we headed west to Florence, Oregon, which is on the coast, and then south along the coastline to Crescent City, California for the night.  This was a long but very enjoyable ride through some very scenic areas.  It was rather a long ride for the day so we didn’t stop to take many pictures along the way.

Our stay tonight is at Econo Lodge, in Crescent City.  It was a Quality Inn when we were there but has since sold to Econo Lodge. This one turned out to be an older motel, fairly well maintained but definitely older.  And when we rolled in to Crescent City you would have thought we had entered Chicago.  Apparently this section of the coastline gets a major breeze off the ocean and so they think it’s normal but we found it so strong that it bothered us.  On the west side of the car you could hardly open the car door and then had to hold on to it to keep it from slamming.  And once into our room the whistling of the wind through the cracks was noisy and eerie.

Dinner tonight was as the Pacific Seafood Restaurant, and was just little different.  We thought we were ordering and dinner of scallops.  When it was served it was a fairly large bowl of what I will call scallop stew.  It was very different, very tasty, and very good.  Served with fresh made sour dough dinner rolls.

Then out for a tour of the town, including a slow beach drive to see the area.  It was very evident that the wind is always coming in off the ocean.  All of the trees and shrubs lean easterly.  In fact some trees are barren of branches on the west side and the trunk leans badly.  We had been doing some thinking about moving to northern California, but after being here we scratched this area from the list of possibilities.

Back to out room where we nearly needed ear plugs to stop the whistling of the wind in the cracks.  I even rolled towels and put them against the door.

Even Chicago isn't that bad! But it didn't seem that windy when we were there. Maybe just the time of year?
