Parents- Day 4- The Great Wall (Simatai)!

While making an itinerary for my parents' visit, I scoured my guidebooks and the Web for information about going to the Great Wall. And after all that, I thought the only place I could easily get us to was the section at Badaling, which I DIDN'T want to go to. It's crowded and very touristy and I wanted my parents to have a better impression and experience at the Wall than that. Then enter Librette, who saved the day. She'd met a guide at Tiananmen much earlier, and gone through him to go to Simatai.
So Librette hooked us up with a car and a tour guide to go to the Simatai section of the Great Wall- all but guarenteed to be less crowded and touristy than the much closer to downtown Beijing section of Badaling.
At the visitors area, people hawked their wares, none of which we bought. After getting our tickets, we made our way to the cable car, and that was a fun ride up!!! I took a lot of pictures and it was a lot of fun! Then after another short walk, we went to the mini-train. At the top, Dad and I hiked up to the wall and Mom and John (our guide) stayed below. We hadn't gotten far when two "guides" went with us, and we let them. They went with us from Tower 5 up to Tower 8. Not as easy as it sounds...those stairs and steep and sometimes treacherous!! But the views were amazing. We took a lot of pics, and then headed back down. The trip down was as good as it was up.
Words can't really describe it, so I'll stop trying here and let you see for yourself. This is the Great Wall at SiMaTai.
