Sea Kayaking from Pigeon Caye
March 28, 2007
We took a 3 hour water taxi ride from our house in Oak Ridge out to the Pigeon Cayes to start a sea kayak voyage along the east side of the island. We traveled as far as North Santa Helena the first day, picked up our water taxi back to our house and then water taxied back the next day to our boats. It helped us cover some ground without having to worry about camping out. The water taxis were very slow. They were in the traditional Dory that the locals use. A more traditional speed boat would have been quicker. We saw a boat that had made it all the way from West Bay for a day trip here. We felt better about our own day trip here though because we took a snorkel here and it was the most amazing one of the trip. The corals are huge and pretty much intact because there are fewer people coming out here that might damage them. After the snorkel we had a lunch and then began our sea kayak along the south shore of Roatan and then popped through a channel onto the north shore and stash our boats at the tiny village at North Santa Helena.
