West Bay, Honduras: West bay has a real nice beach which is the best place to walk and see the town.
I am leaving the day after my sea kayak trip ends and my guide suggests that I stay at his condo in West Bay. Sounds like a good idea. West Bay is the slightly more swanky town on the island. It is laid out along the beach and the best way to see it is just to walk down the beach. We do that and go bar hopping down the beach as sunset is happening. There are lots of places to choose from (but prices are definately cheaper in West End) After having a nice sunset walk in West Bay we go out to dinner in West End. The guide from our trip has lived here in Honduras for a while and has a few favorites for going out to dinner. We go out to dinner at Pinocchios and it is great.
West Bay, Honduras: There are some nice restaurants along the beach in West Bay.
It is off the main street in town but has a nice garden stetting. Not very crowded but we think it is great. I got the Creole Grouper which was great and we had a very tasty Conch Ceviche for an apetizer. We sat at the bar and were able to talk with the Rasta bar tenders (it was a guys night out so we sat at the bar). Fun guys.
After dinner we head out to see what is happening with Semana de Santa. Semana de Santa is the equivalent of Spring Break for Americans but it is for Central Americans. Everyone goes to the beach for the week and parties. We are here on the Friday before the official starting date on Saturday so it is a bit milder than the real deal. But that is fine, we are not here for the all out party scene, but what we find is a lot of fun. We stop by a few bars and then a few discos (discos with no walls- roofs, yes because it rains here). It seems like you just stepped into a Disco in Rio or Buenos Aires because the people are all Latins out having a good time. Not the typical gringo tourist trade that this town normally sees. It was all great fun but I had to head home the next morning on a plane. What a great sendoff from a tropical paradise.
