DonDiriDon Children's Choir from Poland

Signs of the holiday season are everywhere.  Decorations are appearing on houses and businesses. One Washingotn, DC, radio station has been playing Christmas music 24/7 since Thanksgiving Day. But, the Springfield community enjoyed a special international holiday treat Friday evening when the DonDiriDon Children's Choir from Szczecin, Poland, made a concert appearance at St. Raymond's Catholic Church. Talk about the world coming to one's doorstep--St. Raymond's is less that five minutes from my house! Susan and I attended and really enjoyed this concert of holiday music.

DonDiriDon is a youth choir composed of students ages 7 to 18. (There are boys and girls in the ensemble, but it appears boys do not remain past the age at which their voices change.

Thus, the choir has a soprano-alto-treble sound.)  The choir had just appeared at the United Nations in New York and traveled to  the Washington, DC, area for two concerts in Northern Virginia.

The performace began with the Polish song Don-Diri-Don, their signature piece. Traditional pieces included Panis angelicus and the Christmas season was recognized with We Wish You a Merry Christmas (in English) and two Polish Christmas carols. Very impressive was the central piece, a contemporary setting of Pater Noster, for which they had won first prize at a competition in Beijing. (The older 17-18 year old altos sang confidently in this piece. They had no trouble in projecting their voices.) The concert concluded with a moving candlelight Silent Night. (Though the choir did break into Mamma Mia! out in the narthex, showing they like performing showtunes, too!)

Hope you enjoyed the polish carols. There are of course a lot of similar everywhere. Like "Silent Night" is sang probaby all over the world.
