Guatemala City, Guatemala

We took a morning flight out to Guatemala City from San Jose. Bye bye, Nicaragua, Honduras and El Savador, sorry to miss you this time around.
Be sure to get your money changed in Guatemala. After Panama and Costa Rica, I was spoiled by the lack of need to change out of American dollars. Guatemala, however, only takes quetzales. It's also hard to change money that isn't US dollars. I couldn't even find a place that would do Canadian dollars.
Guatemala City seemed really cool for the short amount of time that we got to spend there. The city was incredibly friendly, much friendlier than anywhere we went to in Costa Rica. If we stood on a corner looking mildly confused, someone would come up and ask if they could help.
The streets are lined with many a cheep market and there are some gorgeous squares with stately old buildings.
We only stayed the afternoon, catching a bus onward to Antigua, but left with a very good impression of the city. We didn't plan to stay in Guatemala City, due to bad reviews we'd heard of it (boring, dirty, dangerous), but we got the sense that it was definitely an underrated town.
