Corinth
We rented a car (the hotel manager called and found us one for 150 euros
less than anything I found on the internet). Often car dealerships take you to the
edge of town to get people out. But with calm, patient, David at the wheel, we
drove out of Athens....YIKES... DON'T TRY THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE NERVES OF
STEEL! People do not worry about stop signs, road lines or other cars. We passed a
lady using her cell phone with one hand and her palm pilot with the other. AND,
because she did not have a third hand she was not steering.
along at about 60 mph..... She was all over the road and looked over at us and
laughed as we passed.
Actually, everyone was all over the road, she was just one we knew why......
DRIVING IN GREECE: there is total disregard for the lines, dots, signs and markers... but there is also a total absence of road rage....no problem.... so it is all calm chaos. When you are driving and a car comes up: pull over onto the shoulder and they drive by.... sometimes they are passed while you are being passed so .... the one lane becomes a 3 lane.... no problem..... no one is mad. Everyone is just driving..... There were times when the 2 lane ahead of us had 6 cars side by side.... no problem.... no one is mad..... yikes.
We went to Corinth (Corinth) and saw the site. It was so massive. It
took hours between the museum and the grounds.
photographed to our heart's content. The site was so large it was even across the
road.. The history is incredible to think about.....It was first settled about the 9th
century BC: The Corenthians were ship builders and ad colonies Corcyra and
Syracuse... Trade and industry flourished and Corenthia was famous for pottery and
bronze. It was considered a sinful city: ..but a very successful one.
one of the 3 great powers of the ancient world.. Athens eventually took over
Corinth's place in commerce and ruling the sea. Nero visited and later Hadrian.
Apparently Corinth, sinful Corinth, was the "must see" city.
We thought it would only take a few hours but there was so much. The site was laid out so well. The masonry was amazing. the market place was fully excavated and had arches. There was a huge pot taller than I am. The Amphatheater was only partially exvavated and not restored. In the site the temple of Apollo was so amazing. We took so many pictures....
The museum had a great selection. The had two huge statues of wonderful women that were the guardians at the gates. There was a garden area outside of the museum that had a bunch of statues and grave markers. Many of the heads were lopped off on their marble statues.. why? I have no idea. When we left I was so sad but we needed to get a motel for the night and we were flying by the seat of our pants with no reservations....
Days later .... I saw a postcard and we realized we did not go see the canal.... geez.... who the heck forgets to see the Corinth canal??? It did make us laugh... and I was the only blond in the group! lol.
