the end of the affair

In September 2007, I moved to Utrecht for three months to do a work placement as part of my MSc, vowing to make the most of the opportunity to be paid in pounds whilst living in Euros. Mission Accomplished! I've been to more museums in these three months than in the two and a half years before that, gone on a weekend to Copenhagen and a day trip to Köln, made some wonderful friends, and drunk a LOT of coffee, and quite a bit of beer. Enjoy the Blog!

the end of the affair

so I'm back in the UK now, doing the reflective thing.  I've lost, over the months, one scarf, one pair of leather gloves, a hat, and my dignity, at least twice.  But I've gained several good friends, some of whom I think will stay friends for a very long time, a grounding in research, some career brownie points, and a working knowledge of several amazing cities.  So many of my home friends have never ventured past the cafes and windows of Amsterdam, and I'm nagging all of them to head inland next.  I should be on commission from the tourist board.  Having said that, the rapturous welcome I got from Sam Dog, my mother's boxer and the ackowledged head of clan sarahelaine, and the large box of Cadbury's Roses, has made coming home worthwhile.

So here's to the next trip!
