Wok to Walk

Utrecht Travel Blog › entry 10 of 61 › view all entries

In September 2007, I moved to Utrecht for three months to do a work placement as part of my MSc, vowing to make the most of the opportunity to be paid in pounds whilst living in Euros. Mission Accomplished! I've been to more museums in these three months than in the two and a half years before that, gone on a weekend to Copenhagen and a day trip to Köln, made some wonderful friends, and drunk a LOT of coffee, and quite a bit of beer. Enjoy the Blog!
Walk to Wok serves good noodles fast.

This is as much, really, as you ought to need to say. Walk to Wok is near the Oudegracht, on the way to the Dom from the Station. There's usually a small crowd standing round outside it, which at one point I assumed is a queue. It's not; it's people who have already ordered watching the cooks, the big spurts of pink flame (what are they burning to make the flames pink?), and the way that the two cooks manage to sauce each other's woks, add ingredients and wash up as they go without tripping over each other. So once you've ordered from the simple menu (you either have noodles, rice or veg, choose a couple more ingredients and some sauce) you don't feel like you're waiting at all. Just watching the show. A few minutes later and you can wander off, with freshly cooked noodles done 'specially for you. I've eaten there twice now and the food is good, fresh, and well seasoned. Prices are roughly 5-7 euros; about average for around here, and cheap compared with the UK.

The service is very friendly, especially considering how fast people are working, it's a good sized portion, and there is a tiny area you could eat indoors in if it was raining out. I suspect you'll find me there most dry late night shopping nights between now and Christmas...
