Oh my gosh! Greece is so much more than we could have imagined. We are loving it! It is February 2006: not too many tourists this time of year: mostly lots of friendly Athenians.

National Archeological Museum

We went to the national archeological museum and saw so many many

things.....  so ancient!   It is so amazing that things survived.   pots and

statues and bronze pieces.

I accidentally used a flash and the docent yelled at me.  I was so mortified.

I apologized to him as I left the room and he was very kind and waved hishand and said "it is forgotten".  which is a typical thing a Greek says to accept your apology and let you know they aren't angry.

The rules are that you cannot pose in front of the statues mimicking

them but you can take pictures.   AND NO FLASH!

We sketched things so we could remember the patterns....   They had hundreds of funerary statues and vases.  I think this was because they didn't have the value the bronze pieces did.  Also, probably they broke and were abandoned.

When "poorer" people die they cremate them and put them into huge vases.  The vases have scenes on them of people with their arms over their heads in mourning. The vases are taller than I am. (5'6).

Rich people have life like statues in their honor or a scene (or many

scenes) carved in marble that shows their passions or accomplishments.

warriors and athletics had neat scenes.  Full of action and fighting and drama.

The Oscar Hotel is in a superb location for transit access. Being one block from the train station allows for transport to/from the airport and to regional/other European connections. An Athens Metro station is 1/2 block for in-city movement. This is a nice hotel with excellent amenities and a very helpful staff. Rooms are well equipped and beds are excellent. Upper floor balconies are large, with tables. Paid parking is available. This is the hotel we have used as a start/end point, allowing us to store some items while we travel elsewhere. We return to regroup for the flight home. We have enjoyed several meals in several nearby restaurants whose clientele is primarily neighborhood residents.
