Doing as the Greeks do....

Athens Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

Oh my gosh! Greece is so much more than we could have imagined. We are loving it! It is February 2006: not too many tourists this time of year: mostly lots of friendly Athenians.

Doing as the Greeks do....

Oh my gosh!  Greece is so much more than we could have imagined.  We are

loving it!  The first day we got to Athens (which has a terrible reputation

for being a big dirty city) we got terribly lost and a very nice man went

out of his way to ride with us on the metro to redirect us and get us where

we wanted to go.  He rode the metro with us then had us get out at the correct

stop: he rode up the elevator with us and directed us to go up stairs to the area

were trying to find... then.... he got back onto the metro to go where he was

going before he stopped to help us.

.. (this was an elderly man who did not speak

english.... )

Today we loaded our first YouTube video with Greek sights & Greek music!  Hope you have speakers!

Athens is really big but we didn't find the people rude or the city dirty.

Really, it was amazing how clean everything was.  not a bunch of trash on

the floors of places.  metro is spotless with marble floors that shine.

restaurants are clean and everyone

very concerned about how we are.....   streets have very little litter.

sidewalks clean.   amazing to us.

And the people are so nice.   They think

nothing of stopping and helping you.   We have not been short changed or

over charged once.  Everything was as shown on the menu.   We were surprised

to find that there is a charge for silverware but  apparently that's how

they sneak in the tip.  (people don't tip here)    we always leave a

little bit....

I've been to Athens. I agree with everything you said, but it was dirty with respect to the flea-ridden, tick-bitten large stray dogs that wander everywhere, plus not being able to put loo paper down the loo, when you are there with a small child, is the most unhygienic experience ever! I'll say no more on that! The streets were in a bad state of repair - it reminded me of Sicily, in a way. However, the Acropolis and the Agoras make it all worthwhile.
