Acropolis....Parthanon
OK.... The acropolis was absolutely amazing.... so stunning from the ground. I couldn't stop looking at it. It seems like I have waited all of my life to see it... I cried when I saw it for the first time... It was so emotional to see it in person.... We paid to go up and we were required to turn in our backpacks at the ticket office. **** Just a quick note here..... Tara carried a large over the shoulder bag that was her backpack and she was NOT required to turn it in...... my bag was a small day pack and I had to turn it in: so it might be a good day to carry a large purse or bag instead of a day pack. thought I would mention it..... **** WE hiked up .... not such a climb as you would imagine. I wondered as I walked up the stairs : the Propylaea...how many people in ancient times walked up in a processional.... celebrating political or personal victories.
As we walked into the first area : the first building (Athena temple?) 432 bc ) was being worked on. ... lots of scaffolding. It appears it had been repaired once but the repair was faulty so they had to take the whole thing apart and deconstruct, reconstruct, repair and rebuild it . A huge undertaking. There were signs explaining what they were doing..
The Parthenon is being worked on also, but it appears that has been for years.... but one side is free of scaffolding and very perfect for pictures.... we took a million....... we took from all angles. we took pictures of people and they took picturesof us.... what a high! Everyone there seemed like us: in complete awe.
The view of the town was so wonderful... all of the terracotta tops with different shapes. ... churches and temples... apartments and business's. Old mixed with new...
We were quite surprised to find there is a huge museum on the acropolis top on the far side of the Parthanon.... rooms and rooms of things dating back to mid 500 bc or so...
we could not get over it.... We eventually ran out of time. we went down and
had "Nescafe frappe" (instant coffee shaken until it foams with milk and
sugar) and marveled that we are so lucky to be there.... and stared up at
the acropolis.
