Cathy and I at about 6 in the sweatshirt says something about yoopers being was early :)

So we woke up at 4:00 AM on Labor Day in order to take a 5 mile long walk over the Mackinac Bridge starting at 7:00 AM.  Crazy?  Yeah, totally crazy.  After two quick showers, we made our way over to the area where buses were taking people to the St. Ignace side of the bridge (on the Upper Peninsula).  The buses started leaving at 5:30 AM, and we were able to make one of the first buses.  We felt like we were in school again as the school buses took us to the bridge, and we sat in the back!  How cool are we?

The crew consisted of myself, Cathy, my Uncle, and his wife, Denise.  We arrived in St. Ignace before 6:00 AM and had an hour wait before the walk began.  We made our way to the staging area where we waited with several others as a somewhat funny DJ helped us count down the time.

With 10 minutes to go, the governer herself came out and gave us a pep talk before beginning her run up and down the bridge.  Shortly after she left, we were given the go ahead to begin our walk.  At this same moment, some 200 swimmers were given the ok to begin their 5 mile swim to the opposite shore.  Perhaps 10 minutes into our walk, the sun began to rise over the eastern horizon.  With people as far as the eye could see, we walked up to the crest of the bridge and then down the other side.  Cathy and I crossed the finish line at 8:13 AM, just an hour and thirteen minutes from the time we began the walk.  We were both impressed with ourselves (since no running was allowed) and were within the first 2% of the 50,000 people to cross the finish line, at around 800.

The walk concluded, we went back to the hotel and had a nice breakfast and walked around Mackinaw City one last time, since some fo the stores were having Labor Day specials.  Satisfied with our weekend, we headed home at about 11 AM, since we had a 5 hour drive ahead of us.
