It's funny, it's been about a year and a half since I got back from Portugal. Done a lot of traveling since then, met a lot of people, learned some things along the way. Despite the fact that I don't really talk to any of the team members from that trip - I've kept in surprisingly good touch with the volunteers from Braga. I chat with Irene and Vera on an almost daily basis. Ricardo and Camilo check in every so often with lots of warmth and kisses. We've all remained pretty close because we're about the same age give or take 10 years =) And there were a couple of coordinators in their 30's that took such good care of us. One of them was named Margarida. Jim, the old coot, nicknamed her Margarita-ville after the Jimmy Buffet song, I think? I thought of her immediately when I passed by this bar in Cancun, taking a picture that I meant but forgot to share with her.

So imagine my surprise when Vera told me today that our coordinator Margarida (and she was a most excellent one) passed away recently of cancer. Why it is always the good ones, the ones with that unmistakeable inner light that pass away without letting anyone know, I'll never ever understand. I was so shocked because Margarida was so young, so sweet - you could not tell she was battling cancer. It's a damn shame and a tragedy that such a sweet woman with such poise, grace and beauty was taken away so soon. I'll never forget her lilting voice, her calm way of explaining things to us in her gorgeous version of English. I'll never forget her for as long as I live. It is a pity that future volunteer groups to Habitat will not get to meet such an amazing woman.

Thank you Big, that meant a LOT to me. I was so stunned and upset when I found out last night. You are 100% right, she did what she thought was the best until the very end, I guess, which included taking care of a bunch of high maintenance Americans.. sigh.. for the greater good, right? Big hugs! See you in a couple weeks!! =D

My condolences to your loss ^^; a loss to us all i imagine. Perhaps it was her time...but judging by how you have known her, and by how the people around her have known her, id say that she got everything out of life, and shared it deeply with those whom she cared about the most ^^ how will we spend the rest of our days from here to our time? Godspeed Jenn ^^ take her with you wherever you go, and share her light with everyone you know...peas
