Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace & a Royal yacht!
September 16, 1999
I didn't sleep well through the night due to my ear infection. Suzi gave me some Keflex to help. Thursday had a local city guide showing us the sights of EDINBURGH including PRINCESS STREET and the ROYAL MILE. He told us about the Bodysnatchers, Dr Jekyll & Mr. Hyde and Greyfriars Bobby. While we were seeing the sites in the "NEW TOWN", we passed a building being renovated by some attractive construction workers. I was checking them out while acting goofy & waving at them. I think they enjoyed it as well (maybe) because they were tipping their hats, waving and one turned around and stuck out his bum. They probably were thinking "Dumb American Tourist, let's give her a thrill". lol I of course got pictures of them because they don't look like that around my area.
Anyways, we got to EDINBURGH CASTLE and there were a couple guards standing outside changing. Well you know what I mean. lol It was crowded & had starting to sprinkle (rain). We saw the Crown Jewels, got funny pictures taken in the jail and in a cell sitting on the toilet trying to make a constipated face! I loved the castle but would love to tour it again now that I know more of the Scottish history and being that we were somewhat rushed. Parts pre-date the 16th century.
We also got to tour HOLYROOD PALACE, built in the 15th century, where the Queen lived and it was built on top of an extinct volcano. That was a beautiful place and we viewed many rooms. HOLYROOD ABBEY was built in 1128 and was next to the palace. We had much time after this so we walked around the city taking in the many sites, including St. GILES CATHEDRAL. We also did some window shopping and went in a large mall.
Later in the day we toured the ROYAL YACHT BRITANNIA that was used by the Royal Family; PRINCE CHARLES & DIANNA honeymooned on it. We were not allowed to take pictures inside the yacht. We got to see the Queen's suite, kitchen and many guest rooms and we used audio headphones for a self guided tour. It was very windy and chilly on the deck. This wasn't good for my ear.
After here our bus took us to a pub for 2 drinks-ours were pints of cider. Now this drinking before dinner made me do things that I normally don't do! We had dinner at the George Hotel and I called Ivan our waitor "Cutie" and he never returned! We then had Mark and he called us a rowdy bunch! I was only trying to have some fun! Gees! It was another fun evening in the beautiful city of Edinburgh!
