our team! note the reindeer hat i'm wearing lol.
This past weekend was filled with some rather odd Christmas/Holiday spirit. The Sophia Walking Circle (上智大学歩こう会)that I am a part of had its Christmas party/competition. It was a day full of food, costumes, games, and fun. We divided into four teams and took part in a marathon of events throughout the day. The first event was a cake decorating contest. Each team was instructed to decorate a cake for one of the four club leaders. Christmas cakes are a holiday tradition in Japan, however, this just took it one step further by turning it into a competition based on decoration, taste, and use of ingredients. Not to be partial, but I liked ours the best. We made a strawberry-melon cake with frosting (laced with a secret ingredient: Ginza-strawberry cocktail), mochi, pocky, chocolate, and heart-shaped candles.

It was a ton of fun and I enjoyed seeing the other teams' cakes.

The next event was a series of games that we played including a Walking Circle jeopardy game, charades, and a taste-guessing game. My favorite part of all this: the costumes. You wouldn't think it was Christmas looking at everyone's outfits, but I guess that's just part of the Japanese twist on Christmas parties. I especially liked our Co-President's horse head and the Billy Blanks mask. I bought a rediculous looking reindeer head and wore it with pride. The day ended with a gift exchange. I bought a grab-bag filled with random goods like instant ramen and flu-masks. In return, I got a mickey mouse toy from Tokyo Disney. The gift exchanges here are great because people actually get great gifts, all for under 1000 yen (10 USD). And of course, it wouldn't be a walking circle event if there wasn't a drinking/eating party afterward. All in all, it was a really fun day filled with some kind of holiday spirit and joy.
