My first night and morning...

always sunset in japan
After a brutal 10.5 hour flight from LAX to Tokyo Narita airport, I arrived to Japan in the evening, just in time for the sunset. I'll spare the details of the flight, except that I gave up my nice aisle seat for a cramped window seat to an elderly woman with a bad knee. Oh well. And the food was terrible.

After meeting up with the group in the airport, we shuttled from Narita to Yotsuya where we're staying for two nights at the Tokyu Stay Hotel. It was a fun bus ride meeting the 40 some people in my group and seeing the city at sunset.

Running on adrenaline since most of us had been flying all day and were behind in time by about 16 hours, a handful of us toured the neighborhood of Yotsuya and went to an izakaya (Japanese style bar).

We shared a variety of delicious dishes and talked, mostly in English. As we were leaving, a group of older "salaryman" (Japanese white collar workers) were right behind us exiting the bar after a presumably long evening of drinking. One of them who had had a bit too much to drink decided to introduce himself to our group, shake hands with everyone, and even hug some of us. He was very jolly and happy, although he kept apologizing to us for being so drunk. As he was leaving, he handed our group leader a 10,000 yen bill to split amongst us as compensation for putting up with his antics. This was our first night.

I woke up at 5a this morning to watch the sunrise from our balcony at the hotel. We have a beautiful view of the city. I took a walk by myself around the neighborhood and got lost along some of the alleyways. I stopped in at a restaurant for a traditional Japanese-style breakfast of fish, rice, and miso soup. As I am waiting to embark on our first full day of orientation, I sit on my balcony writing this entry, looking out on a hazy Tokyo morning.

I'm very excited to be reading your first entry. Sounds like the first morning was serene...I'm sure you're jetlagged, and I hope you can get a little rest. I look forward to reading your next entry!
