My husband and I took a month-long trip to the West last year. The whole thing started when my husband wanted to visit the site where a family member had died 50 years ago. Sounds simple but I’ve never been able to take a ‘simple vacation’ so this turned into a month-long odyssey thru Las Vegas and many National Parks.

19 to 22 SEPT 2005 MONDAY thru THURS

Las Vegas to Phoenix - Joshua trees along the road.
Monday we picked up the car and it will be “home’ for the next 3 weeks.  Amazing how much luggage you can put in a Chevy Malibu.  (I’d had a real problem packing trying to get camera gear and clothes for climates from Phoenix to Yellowstone into one bag and a carryon.)  The drive from Las Vegas to Phoenix was through high plains and a forest of Joshua Trees.  They always look vaguely Martian to me.

Tuesday and Wednesday we visited with family in the Phoenix area.  Lots of food, talk, memories of past family get-togethers and catching up on who-is-doing-what.  The sunsets over the mountains were spectacular.

Thursday was amazing.  We drove from Phoenix (at about 1,000 feet above sea level) to Kanab UT (about 6,000 feet above sea level) and the scenery changed completely every time we went up another 500 feet.  First it was flat with barrel cactus with arms, like on the posters of Mexico: then it was mountain foothills with round pin cushion cactus.  It changed to cliffs and tumbleweed, gorges and boulders, pine forests.  We finally reached Kanab which looks like Sedona before it became artsy - and surrounded by glowing red cliffs.
