We let our six year old son choose the destination for our summer holiday and his choice...an Alaskan Cruise. Smart Kid!

Arriving in Alaska

We arrived in Anchorage, Alaska and picked up our rental car and checked into our hotel, actually one of our hotels. We had two rooms booked through Priceline.  My husband didn’t like the first one that he had won through the auction so proceeded to get us another.   Only him!  haha   He booked the Sheraton in Anchorage because it had a pool that was number one on his list of must-haves.

Let me tell you that this was one of the worst Sheraton's that we have ever stayed in: and I mean that in a very loving way!  The "pool" if I may call it that was nothing more then a large hot tub of shiny stainless steel in a room a few feet wider then the Jacuzzi itself.   The room's construction was half finished and lacking in the sparkling clean department.  I joked that I felt like I was climbing into a big boiling stainless steel pot to be cooked!  We laughed and joked, actually enjoying the absurdity of it all though.

Leaving For Alaska

We were so excited when it was finally time to leave for our Alaskan Adventure!  It was my husband's 35th birthday as well!  We picked up our son from his last day of Grade One early and drove to the Airport. We had a very long flight but finally ended up in Vancouver later that evening.  Our flight to Anchorage didn’t leave until early the following morning so we spent the night at the beautiful Fairmont Hotel right in the airport.  The place was absolutely gorgeous.

Shortly after we arrived at the room the doorbell rang and in was wheeled the most beautiful table.  Chocolate cake smothered in fudge icing, jumbo chocolate chip cookies, ice cream adorned with chocolate sticks, flowers, strawberries and kiwi on beautiful cracked granite slabs.  It was a wonderful birthday surprise for my husband from his sister.

Seeing that it was so late and we had such an early morning, we decided the best course of action would be this: eat all the ice cream up, stuff as much cake into our mouths as we could, and then wrap up the cookies to bring with us for the plane ride.  It was a very successful plan!  The adventure was just beginning and it was off to a very sweet start!

The next morning we had a bit of time before our plane was to leave, and so we hit the pool and hot tub in the hotel.  This was the greatest!  Sitting in a Jacuzzi and staring down the big glass windows at the hustle and bustle of the airport below.  We literally overlooked the spot where we were to get our boarding passes within the hour!  Everyone was rushing through the airport.  We just had to leave the pool, go to our room and get our luggage and wheel them down the escalator to check in.  It couldn’t have been any easier!

It was one of the Fairmont Hotels. We have a lot of them up here in Canada. You may have heard of The Banff Springs Hotel? It's owned by the same people. It's very elegant. You and your parents would love it! My son certainly did! :0) http://www.fairmont.com/vancouverairport/ There is a link and a slideshow. The pool literally overlooks the check-in counters at the Vancouver Airport!

I've never heard of hotels within airports! That sounds quite convenient, and it seems like it was a really nice hotel as well! What were the rates like?
