Organ, New Mexico

Just to the east of the second largest city in New Mexico, Las Cruces, is a tiny spot on the road called Organ. I had checked the list of locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Dona Ana County and saw the L. B. Bentley General Merchandise Building was on the list. I stopped by there but it looked like it is now a private home so I did not photograph it. I did take a photograph of the commercial building across the street which looked pretty nice too. Organ is a town of about 323 located along U. S. Highway 70 in Dona Ana County in Southern New Mexico. Organ is about 12 miles east of Las Cruces, and is part of the Las Cruces Metro Statistical Area. Organ is about 2/3 male. Organ was established in 1883, when President Chester A. Arthur granted a 40 acre parcel of land to the Organ Mining Corporation. The mining just outside town produced gold, silver, iron, lead and other minerals. The town built smelting furnaces and an assaying office. In two years, the population increased to 1500. However, the mines were flooded in the 1930s and the Great Depression hit and the town quickly declined. The town experienced a brief resurgence when the White Sands Missile Range opened. Although dominated by its huge neighbor, Las Cruces, Organ retains its own identity. Organ is in a beautiful location surrounded by the San Augustin Mountains and the Organ Mountains. There is one individual location in Organ listed on the National Register of Historic Places. I looked the place over but it is privayte property and with all the trees around it I could not get a good photo anyway. I opted to photograph the nearby commercial building instead. Although it is not listed on the register I found it interesting anyway.
