Veteran's Memorial

Benson is a short distance from where I live so I go here fairly often.  Consequently, I have several friends here so I stopped quickly to wish them a Merry Christmas before departing Arizona.  This used to be a good place to gas up when starting a trip but the Gas City in Benson is no longer cheaper than gas in Sierra Vista so I gassed up before leaving town.  There is a nice museum here, a veteran's memorial, and several historical buildings.  Benson is a decent town of about 5000 (up 5% since 2000) located along Interstate 10 in Cochise County in Southeast Arizona about 45 miles southest of Tucson.  Benson was established in 1880 as a stop along the Southern Pacific Railroad coming from California.  Benson became the main railhead for area mining towns like:  Tombstone, Fairbank, Bisbee, and Contention City until a spur line was buit to Contention City.  The Benson area had been a traditional site to cross the San Pedro River for the Southern Emmigrant Route, the Butterfield Stage Line and the and the San Antonio-San Diego Mail Line, since 1871.  The nearby Jay Six Ranch hosted several politicians as ranch hands through the years including well-known ones like John and Joseph Kennedy, and Barry Goldwater.  Several movies were filmed in the Benson area like"  Pontiac Moon", "Rage" and "Miracle at Sage Creek".  There are three districts and six individual locations in Benson listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
