The kids slowly arriving at Schlossplatz

On Tuesday before 1st Advent the Christmas market in Freiberg opens, one day earlier than Dresden's Striezelmarkt. If possible I go to Freiberg for this opening, it is very different - much quieter than in the big city, no crowds, a better chance of snow also (higher elevation). In addition, Freiberg is always worth a visit with its charming historic old town, the excellent museums - and the lovely Art Deco Cafe Hartmann.

The opening ceremony of the Christmas market starts with a procession from Schlossplatz, the square in front of castle Freudenstein with famous Terra Mineralia museum. Kindergarten/day care kids gather there, dressed in costumes of their favourite fairy tale figures, guys in historic miners garb, musicians, Santa Claus join them.

Some miners are already there!
At about 3 pm, once the procession is formed, they start to march through the old town via Burgstrasse to the Markt square, where the Christmas market takes place. Upon arrival they are welcomed by the Mayor and other local celebrities. A few speeches are given, next is the kick-off of the large pyramid, which always takes three attempts - the presenter encourages the kids to blow, which isn't enough, then he encourages the parents, and at last, with the support of the grandparents, it works. :-) After some Christmas carols were sung, the Christmas tree is lit up and the mayor declares the market open.

Frankly, it's not worth going to Freiberg for this opening ceremony alone. However, the Christmas market is one of the best I've ever visited, with many stalls selling a large variety of wooden Christmas items manufactured in the Erzgebirge/Ore mountains, including smallest items to replace/repair some I have at home. They also have carved wooden pieces, which you rarely find elsewhere in the region. The food is very good, the Glühwein also, and it's less expensive than average. No crowds! And then there's Kaffee Hartmann, at the southwestern corner of Markt square, the Art Deco cafe with long tradition and yummy food/coffee. I always visit after a stroll over the Christmas market, before I hop on a train back to Dresden.
